The new buzzwords in childhood trauma and maltreatment are Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and Toxic Stress. This workshop connects these concepts to the links among Animal Cruelty, Child Abuse and Domestic Violence (The Toxic Triad) by proposing that exposure to animal cruelty intensifies the impact of adverse experiences on the developing child’s brain. More than 70 % of children live in homes with pets. Adults of all ages also suffer stress when their animals are the targets of cruelty.
We know that the behavior that harms the animal is the same behavior that harms the human. Bottom line: we must begin by screening for animal-related experiences to inform the scope and effectiveness of our interventions. This workshop offers a screening tool and provides information on interventions and resources.
